Becoming a Foster Carer: Training

Helping you prepare to foster and taking part in further training

Before you're approved as a foster carer, you'll attend a three day preparation training course.

The course provides an introduction to what being a foster carer involves and provides an insight into the rewards and challenges of fostering. It will help you to decide whether fostering is right for you and your family, and whether you have the potential to be an effective foster carer.

The social workers running the course will also consider if you are ready to move forward with your assessment.

The topics covered in the preparation training course include:

  • the role of the foster carer and working as part of a team
  • why children are fostered
  • the nature and impact of child abuse
  • identity and loss
  • working with others
  • safer care and risk assessments
  • helping children to move on from foster homes (transitions)

Ongoing Training

The training of our foster carers is a high priority, and we provide comprehensive training with a therapeutic approach to keep our foster carers and staff up to date with the latest knowledge research and practice developments.

Once you are a foster carer, you'll receive our training manual - if you'd like to find out more about the manual, please get in touch.
