Quality Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

Guidance on creating places of high quality design

The Quality Design West Berkshire SPD aims to help developers create places of high quality design which are sustainable, secure and accessible to all.
 

The SPD series is made up of 10 documents:

Part 1: Icon for pdf Achieving Quality Design [2MB]

Part one sets out the aims and objectives of the guide, how to use it and general urban design principles relevant to all new development. The document also contains a list of information required to support a planning application.
 

Part 2: Icon for pdf Residential Development [2MB]

The Residential Development SPD describes design principles that are specifically relevant to new residential development. This should be used in conjunction with part three.
 

Part 3: Icon for pdf Residential Character Framework [6MB]

Part three sets out guidance required to assess character in context on new development. It should be read in conjunction with part two and is supported by the Area Design Focus statements below.
 

Part 4: Icon for pdf Sustainable Design Techniques [764KB]

Part four provides a range of methods, techniques and technologies as example solutions of sustainable building design for new development. Part five provides guidance for those proposing external lighting schemes.

 

Area Design Focus Statements

Area Design Focus Statements define the key characteristics of particular areas that could be subject to infill development (the development of a relatively small gap between existing buildings or within an existing settlement boundary):
