Waste Strategy

Increasing recycling and reducing rubbish sent to landfill

To have your say on our draft waste management strategy please complete our survey by midnight on Wednesday, 6 November 2024.

In 2002, we adopted our Icon for pdf 20-year plan for waste management [4MB]  which sets out the long-term vision for the management of the rubbish which we all throw away. The Waste Strategy will be renewed in 2022.

Since 2008, we've been working in partnership with our contractors Veolia to deliver the aims of the strategy to maximise recycling and reduce rubbish.

Since declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019, we have set ourselves additional waste reduction targets as part of our Environment Strategies and our Environment Strategy Delivery Plan. These targets include:

  • Working towards significantly reducing single use plastics from our own activities
  • Reusing, recycling and composting at least 60 per cent of municipal waste we handle by 2030
  • Providing separate food waste collections by 2025
  • Reviewing the potential to collect more plastic waste

You can find out more about waste collections on our Rubbish and Recycling webpages.
