Thatcham North East by-election 2025

On 24 April 2025, voters in Thatcham North East will be able to elect councillors to both Thatcham Town Council and West Berkshire Council, Thatcham North East seats.

The polling stations for Thatcham North East are:

  • Central Family Hub on Park Lane
  • Frank Hutchings Hall in Bradley-Moore Square
  • Thatcham Catholic Hall on the Bath Road

Voters in the South of Cold Ash (Polling District CD4) will only be able to vote in the vacant district seat election and will use the Central Family Hub polling station.

Information for candidates and agents

If you intend to stand as a candidate in either the town or district seat, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing vote@westberks.gov.uk. For detailed information on standing as a candidate, including the forms that are required to be completed, please see the section on 'How to become a councillor'. Nominations must be submitted by hand to the Returning Officer, from Wednesday 19 March 2025 between 9am and 4pm but no later than 4pm on Wednesday 26 March 2025. 

Statement of Persons Nominated (a list of those standing for election) will be available on this page no later than 4pm on Thursday 27 March 2025.

Information for voters

Register to vote

You must be on the electoral register to be able to vote in elections, polls and referendums in the UK. 

You must be: 

  • aged 16 or over to register. (16 and 17 year olds are not able to vote in any elections at present in England.) 
  • British citizen or an Irish citizen. 

You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man - or you do not need permission - and you're a:

  • Commonwealth citizen 
  • Citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain 
  • Citizen of another EU country, if you have had permission to enter or stay - or not needed permission - since 31 December 2020, and this has continued without a break

The deadline for registration for this election is midnight on Friday 4 April 2025.

If you are already registered to vote at your current address, you do not need to register again.

Visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to apply online. You will need your national insurance number. The application should take no longer than five minutes to complete.

Your poll card

If you are registered to vote, you'll be sent a poll card after Wednesday 26 March 2025. This will tell you when the election is due to take place and how you will vote. It will state whether you are registered to vote in person, by post or have a proxy vote in place.

If you are registered to vote at a polling station, the poll card will give the address and hours of poll which is normally 7am until 10pm. 

If you already have a postal vote in place, you will be sent a postal poll card after Wednesday 26 March 2025 which will give details of your postal voting arrangements. 

If you already have a proxy vote in place, you will be sent a proxy poll card after Wednesday 26 March 2025 with details of your proxy voting arrangements. Your nominated proxy voter will also be sent a proxy poll card, telling them how to vote on your behalf.  

Voting at a polling station

You do not need to take your poll card with you to the polling station to vote, unless you are a registered anonymous voter, but you must bring photo ID.

Registered anonymous voters must also bring an Anonymous Elector's Document to the polling station.

If you are registered as an anonymous voter and want to vote at your local polling station but do not have an Anonymous Elector's Document or haven't applied for one, please contact us.

Your poll card will give the address of your polling station.

Voting by post or proxy 

If you are unable to get to your polling station on polling day, you can apply to vote by post or proxy instead. Please see the table below for the deadlines for applying to vote by post or proxy for this election. You will need your national insurance number to apply and if you apply online you will need to upload your signature.

Please note that if you vote by proxy, your nominated proxy will need to go to your local polling station and take their own acceptable photo ID. If they do not have photo ID, they can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.
