Purity by Alan Sowersby

Spinning world turned upside down,

Like a snow globe shaken hard,

Shocked to its core, destabilised,

As the pandemic leaves us scarred.

No-one escapes its vice-like grip,

The mutations of its strains,

This vicious and heartless virus,

Spreading misery through our veins.

The challenge it brings to our civilisation,

Has been extensive and profound,

Forcing our mental health off track,

Like a mechanical clock we're wound.

But nature provides its own respite,

When troubled times dictate,

A way of escaping back to peaceful life,

From this catatonic state.

People start to share their worries,

The tensions that reside,

Protected by the inner soul,

Well-hidden deep inside.

Acts of pure humanity,

That force barriers and walls to tumble,

Removing masks of security,

Replacing stoic heart with humble.

By confiding something secret,

With one in whom we trust,

Can release these pent-up mental pressures,

From trauma, from acts unjust.

This process of unburdening though,

Need not be a one-way deal,

The beauty is in its reciprocation,

As we help each other heal.

Yes - there's something approaching purity,

In finding a kindred soul,

Of confidential connections forged,

That help our damaged minds feel whole.
