2024-free bus travel

West Berkshire Council are pleased to once again offer FREE bus travel across West Berkshire on the following Saturdays: 16 November, 14 December, and 21 December.

This fantastic initiative has been developed in partnership with our local bus operators and aims to encourage the community to explore sustainable transportation options while enjoying a day out during this festive period without the need for a car.

Make the most of this free offer with some of these options:

  • Catch the Christmas lights: Wander through Newbury or nearby towns like Reading, Basingstoke, Swindon, and Didcot, taking in the holiday displays without parking hassles.
  • Holiday shopping made easy: Travel to local shops and town centres to find the perfect gifts.
  • Reconnect with friends and family: Visit loved ones and enjoy the holiday spirit together.

Simply board your bus within West Berkshire on the applicable Saturday and travel completely free, all day! Concessionary bus pass holders can also use this promotion. The offer applies to all journeys beginning and ending in West Berkshire, making it easy to get around or connect to nearby towns. To make full use of the free travel, remember to ask the driver for a return ticket when you board.

Reading Buses, Newbury & District, Thames Travel, Stagecoach, and the council's Connect buses are all on board for this festive initiative. Together, we're helping make the season joyful and sustainable for everyone in West Berkshire.

Councillor Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for the Environment and Highways at West Berkshire Council, said:

"We're delighted to work in partnership with our local bus operators to bring back free festive bus travel, making it easy for residents to explore, shop, and connect with family and friends.

"We know from previous years that residents really appreciate this offer of free bus travel as passenger numbers increase over these dates. We also understand that the holiday season brings extra expenses and we're glad to help more people enjoy getting around town with ease. By leaving the car at home, we can all share in a greener, more sustainable season together."

This free bus travel offer has been made possible by funding from HM Government, given to West Berkshire Council to support bus service improvements through our Enhanced Partnership with local bus operators.
